Managing Your Stress Bucket


I think many of us are aware of a ‘busy head’ these days. We’re doing our best to follow Covid-19 government guidelines to keep ourselves and others safe whilst trying to make the most of a little more freedom to be out and about, socialise, go back to the office etc. We’re constantly risk assessing and adjusting our boundaries to tentatively take steps out of what has become our comfort zone with one eye on the news and the latest statistics.


Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy can help you to spend more of your time in your Intellectual Mind (IM), as opposed to your Primitive Mind (PM), utilising the ability to think rationally and positively whilst calmly looking for solutions. But you can’t put up a barrier to negative thoughts and nor would you want to – some of those will be important to your safety and need to be addressed. And there may be the odd negative thought, that you don’t manage to deal with, which slips though the net - generating anxiety which fills your Stress Bucket. That’s ok but it’s important it doesn’t get too full or even overflow.


Thankfully your REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep will empty your Stress Bucket by re-running the events of the day – either clearly or metaphorically (whilst you’re dreaming) and strip the emotion away leaving a factual narrative account. Effectively moving these experiences from the PM into the IM so that by the morning you’ve gained perspective and control, feeling lighter and less cluttered, knowing the best way forwards into the new day with a lovely empty Stress Bucket and ready for any challenges that come your way.


Unfortunately at the best of times you only have a 20% quota of REM sleep every night and when you’re feeling overwhelmed the quantity and/or quality of your sleep is often compromised. You may struggle to get to sleep, be wide awake during the night and generally feel exhausted. And the more tired you are = the more time you’re inclined to spend in your PM which promotes and is fuelled by negative emotions.
